Gracemere siege and house fire

A man charged with arson and assaulting police after a siege and house fire incident in Central Queensland has been remanded in custody.

Clive Robert Peckett, 42, had his matters mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on March 22 - three days after he allegedly started a fire which damaged a house and a car during a four-hour siege in Gracemere.

Police were called to the Kirsten Close, Gracemere, residence about 6.45pm on Saturday to a disturbance.

During the alleged siege, the house caught on fire with smoke emitting from the roof, particularly around the garage area.

Police will allege there was some damage to the house and a vehicle.

Police said the house and a vehicle were allegedly damaged during the incident.

Reports indicated there was a vehicle parked inside the garage.

There was also a white ute and a silver sedan parked in the driveway under a carport.

Police climbed ladders to talk to the man over the fence while fire trucks powered spotlights placed on top of a shipping container situated along the side of the backyard fence.

The man exited the house into the backyard about 10.55pm.

Police, including a police dog, swarmed the backyard, arresting the man within seconds.

He was handcuffed and walked to a waiting ambulance where he was assessed by police and paramedics before being taken to hospital.

A police spokesperson said the 42-year-old male was taken into custody about 11pm after police negotiations.

The police spokesperson said the man was later released into police custody.

A grinder was then used to cut a gap in the garage roller door as firefighters continued to attend to the fire damaged structure.

About 15 minutes later, two firefighters exited the house via the front and handed two dark handbags to a police officer.

The spokesman said no one was injured and investigations were on-going.

The man has been charged with one count of arson (domestic violence offence), two counts of serious assault on police, one of seriously obstructing police and one of wilful damage.

Mr Peckett did not make a bail application when his matters were mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on March 22.

Briefs of evidence were ordered and the matters were adjourned until June 1.

The court heard Mr Peckett would be applying for Legal Aid with the arson charge required to be dealt with in the district court.
