Jason Beattie charged for Rockhampton AusPost heist and other offences

A man accused of being involved in a 13-hour heist at the Rockhampton Australia Post Centre is facing a raft of charges. Find out what police allege happened at the Centre.

A man accused of being involved in the Rockhampton Australia Post heist at the weekend has been remanded in custody and due to face court again later this month.

Jason Robert Beattie, 47, has been charged with enter premises and commit indictable offence, unlawful use of motor vehicle, offence to buy or possess S4 or S8 medicines or hazardous poisons and possessing anything for use in the commission of a crime in relation to the heist and what he possessed when he was arrested.

His charges for the heist, along with others for alleged offences from three other dates, were mentioned in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on March 1.

Police will alleged Mr Beattie and co-accused broke into the Australia Post Centre on the corner of Musgrave and Elphinstone streets, Berserker, Rockhampton on February 25 about 7am and over a period of 13 hours, came and went from the centre, opening mail and packages and taking items.

The mail centre is the main sorting centre for the Capricornia district, sorting and distributing mail for as far west as Winton.

Police will also allege an Australia Post vehicle was stolen about 9pm that day.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Kevin Mawdsley, from Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Branch, told media the alleged stolen vehicle was located about 11.40pm on Saturday at Parkhurst. It was burnt out.

He said the group members were all wearing high visibility clothing during the alleged break in.

A 34-year-old Allenstown man was charged on Sunday night with enter premises and a number of other unrelated offences and after his first mention on Monday, his matters were adjourned to March 27.

Police are still looking for four or five others.

Mr Beattie’s matters were set down for a long plea on March 24 and he was remanded in custody.

He did not apply for bail.

Mr Beattie’s other charges include two counts of disqualified driving, offence to buy or possess S4 or S8 medicines or hazardous poisons and possessing anything for use in the commission of a crime, possess property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence, possessing dangerous drugs, not wearing a seatbelt and contravening a direction or requirement of police.

Those charges were laid for alleged offending on February 1, 16 and between January 31 and February 9.
