A heavily tattooed recidivist violent offender has been jailed again for yet another alcohol-fuelled attack on his on-again, off-again partner of 10 years.

Jason Anthony Young, 48, punched his victim in the face about 10 times before shoving her up against a wall and repeatedly pushing his thumbs into her eyeballs (gouging), followed more punches, Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard on October 13.

Young, who had a six-page criminal record, pleaded guilty to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm for the assault which took place on June 29 at Westwood.

Police prosecutor Sergeant David Longhurst said Young’s criminal record was “protracted, vicious and violent” and consisted mainly of violent behaviour towards those he was in a domestic relationship with including the victim of this offence who is the mother of his two children and a different victim he choked.

Defence lawyer Jess King said her client did not recall the incident but did recall getting into an argument and kicking a door.

She said Young accepts alcohol is his problem and the stressors of maintaining full time employment and helping care for his nine and five year old children, along with the victim’s social drinking with friends, led to lapse in his rehabilitation.

Ms King said Young had abstained from alcohol while on parole for just over a year for the choking offence for which he was sentenced for in July 2021.

“Every time he drinks, he ends up in jail,” she said.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said Young’s alcohol issues could only be described as being an alcoholic.

“You do understand that if you rage like this, you could kill someone?” she asked Young, who replied yes.

Ms King said he has an impressive employment history considering the amount of time he has spent in prison which included working as a panel beater, four years at the meatworks, four years at Port Alma salt works and seven years at Stanwell power station.

Ms Beckinsale sentenced Young to 18 months prison with immediate parole eligibility.
