A mother is fearful her own son will kill her after he allegedly broke into his father’s gun safe before a Two-and-a-half-hour siege with police, court documents allege.

Jamie Paul Broszat, 49, is accused of taking an angle grinder to his father’s gun safe at the family’s Gunder Road, The Caves, property after 6pm on February 21.

He is charged with one count of serious assault of a person over 60, one of obstructing police, three of wilful damage, one of unlawful possession of explosives and one of discharging a weapon on private land without the owner’s consent.

According to police objection to bail documents, submitted in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on February 23, Mr Broszat was living with his parents, had returned home about 6.10pm on February 21 and could be heard screaming by a witness who called emergency services.

Police allege Mr Broszat had an altercation with his parents and damaged property including picking up outdoor chairs and smashing them on the patio, damaging a fridge containing drinks by pulling it off a stand and strewing glass drinks across the concrete, causing them to smash in a pile on the ground.

They further allege he pushed his father and struck him in the face, causing his lip to spit before using an angle grinder to access his father’s gun safe which contained five rifles.

It’s also alleged in the court documents that Mr Broszat went into the residence and broken into a set of locked drawers where ammunition was kept and on seeing this, his parents fled in a vehicle and called for help.

Police arrived and a siege allegedly took place, with negotiators called in and Mr Broszat allegedly threatening to shoot them as they approached the home.

“The defendant (allegedly) has then returned to the shed area and has loaded a shotgun and let off a round out the window of the shed that was clearly heard by officers in the area,” the documents state.

“There has been at least two further loud explosive noises come from the shed while the defendant was part of the siege.”

The siege ended about 8.44pm, according to the court documents which also state Mr Broszat had been living with his parents for the past two years following a relationship breakdown, but was no longer welcome there due to this incident.

“The defendant’s mother is fearful of the defendant and his behaviour on this occasion,” the documents allege.

“She is of the belief that the defendant will kill her.”

According to the documents, Mr Broszat had become unemployed a week prior to the incident and allegedly admitted to police after his arrest that he was addicted to drugs, had been to rehabilitation twice and mentioned significant mental health matters which concerned police.

Mr Broszat’s bail application was refused and he was remanded in custody.

His charges have been set down for a long plea slot in the court’s calendar for March 23, 2024.
