Four men performed a citizens’ arrest after a security guard was assaulted outside a Yeppoon hotel, a court has heard.

Jacob Ned Sawrey, 30, pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on September 28 to assault, drink-driving and two counts of unlicensed driving.

The court heard that Sawrey’s recent troubles with the law started on July 24 when he was caught drink-driving on Yeppoon’s James Street.

He blew a blood-alcohol reading of .120.

The prosecution said in a separate incident on August 5, just after midnight, police were called to a disturbance outside Yeppoon’s Pacific Hotel, where Sawrey assaulted a security guard.

The court heard that when police arrived, four men were holding an intoxicated Sawrey “down on the ground” and he was subsequently arrested for assault.

It was told that prior to the assault, the security guard had been standing outside the Pacific Hotel when security from The Strand Hotel refused Sawrey entry because he was drunk and behaving aggressively.

At the Pacific Hotel, Sawrey was also refused entry and he then punched the security guard in the face, the court heard.

In later incidents, Sawrey was caught driving while unlicensed twice - the first on September 1 on Yeppoon Road, Bondoola, and the second on Yeppoon’s Barry Street on September 24.

The court heard that Sawrey had a criminal history and the prosecution sought a licensed premises banning order.

Solicitor Myles Heath said Sawrey was a dad of four who had been working as a concrete truck driver until he lost his driver’s licence.

Mr Heath said Sawrey, who grew up in Cooktown and moved to Yeppoon about six months ago, was introduced to the drug ice when he was 18 and it had “ruled his life for 10 years.”

Magistrate Cameron Press placed Sawrey on 12 months’ probation and ordered him to perform 100 hours of unpaid community service.

Mr Press also banned Sawrey from Capricorn Coast licenced premises, including The Pacific Hotel and The Strand Hotel.

Sawrey was disqualified from driving for four years and six months.

Criminal and traffic convictions were recorded.
