A Yeppoon dad who oversees 14 staff at work also oversees a massive SPER debt due to his repeat offending.

When Magistrate Jason Schubert asked Jamie Lee Timms how much he owed SPER, the reply was: “Would not have a clue.”

The pineapple farm supervisor then added he was paying the government collection agency $60 per fortnight.

Mr Schubert said he would make some enquiries.

A few minutes later, the magistrate had the answer.

“To your credit, you are regularly making payment to SPER - you’ve got what is a total amount that has been ordered against you in fines, of some $20,172.99,” Mr Schubert said.

The court heard that Timms, 30, had already paid almost $3000 in fines to the State Penalties Enforcement Registry.

Timms pleaded guilty in Yeppoon Magistrates Court on October 14 to a public nuisance charge.

That stemmed from an incident outside a Yeppoon residence on the afternoon of September 24.

The prosecution said police were called to that street as Timms had started harassing another man who he knew.

When police arrived, the other man told them that Timms had driven past his house and given him “the finger”.

The man responded to Timms with a hand gesture.

Timms then drove past again but this time he parked his vehicle a few houses up from the other man.

Timms walked towards the man and started verbally abusing him, trying to entice him to fight.

Timms adopted a fighting stance and “shaped-up” to the man while “bouncing around”.

At one point, Timms stepped forward as if to intimidate the other man.

Timms then walked back to his car while continuing to level verbal abuse.

The other man provided police with video footage of the incident.

Officers attended Timms’ residence and he was subsequently arrested.

Timms’ solicitor said Timms was a father of three young children who was “not in a good head space” at the time of the incident.

The solicitor said Timms was a supervisor at a pineapple farm and he oversaw 14 employees at that operation.

Mr Schubert noted that Timms had a criminal history which included wilful damage offences in 2016 and 2019, stealing and receiving offences in 2012, and a previous public nuisance offence in 2010.

“Today, in an effort to deter you, to get the message through to you that you need to grow up and not behave like... in an immature manner such as this, today you’ll be convicted and fined $450 and that amount is referred to SPER, and a conviction is recorded.”
