A man who punched his partner multiple times, telling her he wanted to hurt her when she tried defending herself, went on to assault police and tried to stop them from handcuffing him.

Graeme Reginald Fay, 53, pleaded guilty on April 4 in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to one count each of assault occasioning bodily harm, assault police and obstruct police.

Police prosecutor Brandy Butler said Fay punched his partner multiple times in the head.

The woman said when she went to defend herself, Fay hit her and told her he wanted to hurt her.

Ms Butler said the victim sustained a cut to her left eyebrow, a cut to her lip, bruises and scratches to her arms.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale said Fay went on to kick a police officer in the inner upper thigh and wrapped his right arm around the other police officer’s leg to prevent being handcuffed.

Ms Butler said Fay was last before the court in March 2020 for a common assault.

Defence lawyer Samantha Legrady said Fay had been in a relationship with the victim, who was a cousin of his former wife’s, for 12 months.

She said he had slipped on water in the hallway earlier that day and felt he “wasn’t really with it”.

Ms Legrady said Fay and the woman had both been drinking, but he wasn’t intoxicated at the time.

She said he was supported in court by his brother.

She said he had a stroke which left blood clots on his brain and kidneys, 4o per cent of his hearing was lost, and he now had depression and anxiety.

Ms Legrady said this was Fay’s first time in prison.

Ms Beckinsale sentenced Fay to nine-months’ prison, declared 33 days as time served, and set parole release on June 2, 2022.
