A young diesel fitter apprentice busted possessing a significant amount of methamphetamines claims he was hiding it from a loved one.

Kain William Granzien, 22, had 5.658 grams of methamphetamines in 7.785gs of substance when he was intercepted after driving through a stop sign on the Burnett Highway at Bouldercombe on April 10, 2022.

The meth was found in an Adidas bag behind the driver’s seat with a used drug pipe.

Granzien, who was sentenced for possessing the meth in the Supreme Court in Rockhampton on October 3, told police he started a new relationship a month beforehand and his new girlfriend did not tolerate drugs, so he hid it in his car.

Defence barrister Scott McLennan provided the court with two negative drug test results.

“He is a young man who went off the rails for some time,” he said.

Mr McLennan said this occurred after he lost his apprenticeship during a downturn in the industry and had relationship difficulties.

Granzien was out of work for about a year, the court heard.

“Since 2022, he has repartnered and importantly, found another employer with who he could recommence his apprenticeship,” Mr McLennan said.

He said the new employer contracts to mines, so Granzien was subject to drug testing.

Granzien will finish his apprenticeship at the end of this year, the court heard.

Justice Graeme Crow said the Gladstone born and raised offender was on a suspended sentence at the time for an assault occasioning bodily harm conviction.

He commended Granzien’s new partner for not tolerating drugs, saying “she is obviously a wise person”.

“It’s cheap,” Justice Crow said.

“It’s nasty.

“It turns good people into animals.”

Granzien pleaded guilty to one count of possessing more than two grams of a dangerous drug and one of possessing a used drug utensil.

He was sentenced to 20 months prison, and his suspended sentence of three months was wholly activated and ordered to run concurrently.

Granzien was granted immediate release on parole.
