Fitzroy Sharks clubhouse at Allenstown broken into for fourth time this year

A Central Queensland football club has been broken into for the fourth time this year, just days out from their first home game of the season. Here’s what happened.

What should be a time of excitement ahead of their first home game of the season, has turned into frustration and disappointment for members of a local rugby league club after their clubhouse was broken into for the fourth time this year.

The Fitzroy Gracemere Sharks Rugby League Club had about $1500 of alcohol and equipment stolen on Thursday night when a person, or people, smashed their way through windows and into the clubhouse in Allenstown.

It’s the fourth time the club has been broken into this year and members have had enough.

Club president Cory Peterson said he couldn’t understand why people would target not for profit clubs and organisations like theirs.

“It’s certainly frustrating and disappointing,” he said.

“We just got our cold room operational again so we were quite looking forward to using it and now we have to start all over again.

“We don’t think it was kids because they would have needed a car to take all of this stuff away.”

Mr Peterson said security grills on the window had been damaged and windows were smashed at the club house, and now they were looking at spending thousands on security.

“We’re getting sick of it,” he said.

“What we’re looking at doing and by the time we get it all set up we’re looking at being about $5000 out of pocket.”

The club is looking at installing new security measures.

While the club will “live another day” Mr Peterson said not all not for profit organisations were so lucky.

“To put it quite simply, they fold,” he said.

“It sends them broke and some of them don’t have insurance and just can’t keep going.

“We’ve got a pretty resilient, good bunch here but some of them really struggle with us getting targeted all the time.

“I’m worried some will walk away because they can’t take it anymore, it’s very disheartening.

“Our club means a lot to the community and there’s been a lot of uproar so if we catch who’s done it they’ll be in trouble.”

Police are investigating the matter.
