A father of two has found himself back behind bars after struggling after being released from prison and turning to drugs.
Rockhampton Magistrates Court heard Daniel Ahwang, 32, had only been out in the community for a short period of time before he assaulted a woman in North Rockhampton and advanced on police, resulting in him being tasered.
Police prosecutor Clancy Fox said police attended an address on Rush St, Koongal, at 5.53pm on May 18 after receiving reports of a disturbance with screaming being heard.
Mr Fox said police found two men at the rear of the home, including Ahwang who was “erratic and aggressive” towards police.
He said Ahwang was given clear instructions to remain calm and not advance towards police, however, did not comply with those instructions and was tasered and transported to hospital.
He said police spoke to the victim at the address, who advised she had been pushed in the chest by Ahwang and forced backwards.
The court heard Ahwang was on parole at the time he committed the offences.
Mr Fox said Ahwang was arrested on July 16 in relation to a return to prison warrant.
“He will continue on to custody regardless of the outcome in court today,” he said.
Defence lawyer Brendan Gimbert said his client struggled after being released from prison with a lack of access to services or knowledge about where to go for assistance.
“He unfortunately ended up using drugs and in hospital was told he had a drug-induced psychosis,” he said.
Mr Gimbert said his client had been engaged with mental health.
Ahwang pleaded guilty on July 17 to one count each of common assault and obstructing a police officer.
He was sentenced to six months prison, wholly suspended for 18 months.
