A mother of two attempted to smuggle 59 buprenorphine strips into Capricornia Correctional Centre by concealing them in her bra.

Rockhampton District Court heard Alexandrea-Louis Maree Oberle, 28, attended the prison at Etna Creek, north of the city on May 5, 2023, to visit her partner’s friend, who was incarcerated.

Crown prosecutor Ryan Minuti said Oberle was detained by corrective services staff who had intelligence she had intended to supply dangerous to someone in the facility.

Mr Minuti said Oberle had initially denied having anything on her person but removed a package containing 59 buprenorphine strips from her bra when it was mentioned she would be searched.

He said during the investigation police also gained access to Oberle’s phone and found various text messages in the week leading up to the offence where she had organised with the inmate and other unknown persons to facilitate the supply.

“There was some pre planning or premeditation in relation to this offending,” he said.

Defence barrister Julie Marsden said her client had a difficult childhood, left home at 15, started using marijuana at 16 and ice by 19 and 20.

Ms Marsden said drugs became part of her client’s lifestyle.

She also said her client was under financial pressure at the time because of her lifestyle.

“She wanted to go up and see his best friend who was living up north with her children,” she said.

“He offered to pay for that if she brought his package in.

“He arranged it all.

“She went and collected the drugs.

“She didn’t pack it.

“She didn’t know exactly what was in it, but she accepts she knew it was drugs.

“She accepts it was a very poor decision.”

The court heard Oberle had taken “significant steps” to change her lifestyle.

Ms Marsden handed to the court material supporting that her client had completed a six-week rehabilitation resident program with Lives Lived Well.

She said her client was working as a cleaner and continued to engage with counselling.

Oberle pleaded guilty on May 22 to one count each of supplying dangerous drugs with the circumstance of aggravation, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing anything used in the commission of crime defined in Part 2.

Judge Jeff Clarke sentenced Oberle to 12 months prison, which was wholly suspended for two years.

Criminal convictions were recorded.
