One of the Rockhampton region’s fastest growing areas could soon have a brand new childcare centre after plans were lodged with council.

The plans were recently lodged with Rockhampton Regional Council for the centre to be built at Gracemere.

According to the plans the childcare centre would be built at 3 O’Shanesy St, which also has frontage on Pierce St.

The proposed site, which is currently a vacant block of land, is located behind Gracemere State School and near Gracemere Shoppingworld.

According to the proposal document, the centre would be able to accommodate up to 146 children.

The centre would have two babies’ rooms which would have a capacity of 12 children each, two toddler rooms for 15 children each and two junior rooms for 22 children each.

At the far end of the facility there would be two senior rooms for up to 22 children each.

As well as the rooms for children, the development would also include amenities such as an office, kitchen, laundry, storeroom and staff/disabled bathroom.

The designs also include two outdoor play areas, one of them will be a smaller area dedicated to the babies rooms, which would be accessed from these rooms.

The second play area would be much larger and for the toddlers, juniors and seniors – which would be able to be directly accessed from their respective rooms.

According to the planning document the centre would be operational between 6am and 6pm and would have 16 staff.

The centre would be accessed via Pierce St and would have 41 car parks, allowing 16 parks for staff and the other 25 for people picking up and dropping off children.

The proposed Gracemere childcare development is just one of many across Central Queensland.

In Rockhampton four homes are in the process of being demolished in Berserker to make way for a new 94-place centre off Musgrave St.

The Kirkellen St properties sold for a combined $1.22 million.

Work has also started on the site of the former Imbina Medical Centre at 149 Denham Street, Allenstown.

The building is to be redeveloped into a 90-space centre for children from zero to 12 years.

The owner is also looking to provide overnight care, catering to shift workers.

Plans had also been approved for national boutique and holistic company Eden Academy to build a 90-space street in Murray and Gillespie Street in Wandal in June 2023 however it is understood the developer has pulled out.

Rockhampton has 16 registered childcare centres and outside of school hours care facilities.
