“We want to ensure the continued success of Rockhampton and Central Queensland’s rich performing arts community and investigate the suitability for a regional exhibition and convention centre.”

The adored Rockhampton Pilbeam Theatre may be repurposed as part of a plan to bring a convention centre to the city.

Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke’s ‘Rocky 2030’ whitepaper promotes the idea of a convention centre in Rockhampton, the only major regional city in Queensland without one.

The whitepaper describes the lack of a convention centre as ‘denying the city and the region the opportunity to hold major conferences and events’ and how ‘the city misses out on direct economic benefits’.

Mayor Tony Williams said Rockhampton Regional Council was investigating whether the Pilbeam Theatre could be used as a convention centre.

“Rockhampton’s Pilbeam Theatre has been the performing arts centre of Central Queensland for over 40 years,” Mr Williams said.

“The relocation of the Art Gallery – along with the current age of the Pilbeam Theatre – presents a perfect opportunity to investigate the potential this area holds in the performing arts and exhibition space across Central Queensland.

“We want to ensure the continued success of Rockhampton and Central Queensland’s rich performing arts community and investigate the suitability for a regional exhibition and convention centre.

“At the moment we’re seeking funding toward a detailed business case for a redevelopment of the Pilbeam Theatre and former Art Gallery to provide Central Queensland with a modern contemporary performing arts and exhibition centre that keeps pace with growth across the region, whilst enhancing and promoting the liveability of all Central Queensland communities.”

Conrad Gargett Pty Ltd was awarded a $123,500 contact to create a concept design for the Pilbeam Theatre in 2019, however, those designs have not been made public.
