Petero Civoniceva Medal tally: Capras players Trey Browne and Jamie Hill in Hostplus Cup’s best and fairest award running

The Capras will look to continue their good form when they host the Tweed Seagulls in Indigenous Round. Coach Lionel Harbin reveals what is behind the team’s success so far this season.

Hooker Trey Browne is in second place with 13 points, three behind Burleigh Bears’ fullback Taine Tuaupiki who is leading the race for the Hostplus Cup’s best and fairest award.

Lock Jamie Hill is on nine points, equal with Redcliffe Dolphins’ fullback Trai Fuller.

Browne and Hill will be looking for big performances again this weekend when the Capras take on the Tweed Seagulls in Indigenous Round at Browne Park.

The Capras are sitting third on the competition ladder, having recorded seven wins, one draw and three losses so far this season.

Coach Lionel Harbin said the players’ attitudes had been instrumental in their dramatic form reversal after they finished as wooden spooners last year.

“They keep turning up each week wanting to get better and to improve,” he said.

“They come in with the right attitude and they’re taking it game by game and not getting too far ahead of themselves.

“They’re getting a lot of confidence and a lot of belief from what they’re doing so that’s really good.

“In our last three games against some really tough opposition, we were able to get two wins and a draw so it’s all about building on that now.”

Harbin said it had been a collective effort from the squad, though he did make special mention of the forward pack who had been pivotal in laying the platform for the team’s success so far.

“It’s not just one or two players, everyone is playing their part and that’s why we’ve been able to do what we’ve done,” he said.

“We’ve got a squad of players performing well.

“The guys in our squad who haven’t played for us yet are playing in the local league and doing good things there so they’re applying pressure which means everyone is competing for spots.”

Harbin said the Capras squad featured six Indigenous players, four of whom were in the starting line-up on Saturday - winger Brandon Roberts, centre Jonus Pearson, five-eighth Radean Robinson and prop Bailey Butler.

A fifth, Jack White, is 18th man.

“It’s important to highlight that when the Capras have done well in the past, they’ve had a good representation Indigenous players in those squads,” Harbin said.

“They obviously bring something to the team and it’s been exciting what the likes of Brandon and Radean have done so far so I’m sure they’re looking forward to this weekend.”

Harbin said the Capras would need to be “on their game” against the Seagulls.

“They move the footy really well, they do a lot of things really well,” he said.

“They have a really experienced halfback in Lindon McGrady to lead them around the park and they’re really strong defensively.”

The Hostplus Cup game kicks off at 4pm, with the Hastings Deering Colts clash between the Capras and Seagulls at 2pm.
