One of the region’s leading construction firms will start work on Central Queensland’s first hospice this month.

Paynters Pty Ltd has won the tender to build the Fitzroy Community Hospice, a state-of-the-art palliative care facility in Agnes Street, Rockhampton.

Construction is set to start in January, with on-site operations starting in December.

Announced in March 2021 and approved by Rockhampton Regional Council in August that year, the 12-bedroom facility will provide 24-hour end-of-life care services.

Community-based palliative care is much-needed in the region, with the majority of the nine existing hospices in the state in the south-east corner, with none further north of Hervey Bay.

The federal government has committed $8 million towards construction, with another $2.5 million from community fundraising to meet the costs of land, room fit-out, equipment, furniture and operation.

Paynters has delivered numerous major construction projects across the state within the community, health, aged care and education sectors.

Fitzroy Community Hospice board chair Dr Vicki Richmond said the project marked a “significant milestone” for the region.

“Paynters have displayed a willingness to listen and understand the unique requirements of the facility,” she said.

“As a charitable organisation that strives to support local families, working with a building partner who values inclusion and excellence as we do is important to us.

“Paynters have a solid reputation for delivering large high-quality construction projects throughout Central Queensland, and a commitment has been made to appoint local workers and suppliers as much as possible.”

Dr Richmond said the lack of palliative care services in the community meant many families in Central Queensland were not receiving the support they needed during one of life’s most challenging times.

“Extensive consultation has been undertaken to ensure the facility will meet the needs of the community, both now and into the future,” she said.

“To build and operate the Fitzroy Community Hospice will require the support of the community and local business partners.

“All money raised will stay within the local community and be used to benefit the local community.”
