Yepp, beer please!

This clever marketing is the slogan for a new boutique brewery opening on the Capricorn Coast – Yepp Brewing Co.

From the outside, 6 Macadamia Drive, in The Gateaway industrial area, looks like it is just a shed.

But stepping inside, you will be impressed to find a timber bar set in front of a wall with sleek black tiles and a hot pink neon light sign with four shiny beer tanks to the side, complemented with timber and greenery above.

The business is the brainchild of husband and wife team Justin and Tanya Adams who moved to the region 18 months ago from Ipswich.

Brewing beer has been a passion of Mr Adams’ for the last 10-plus years as he is keenly interested in the research and science side, always making new recipes to improve his quality.

Craft beers and boutique brewers have been growing in popularity in the last few years.

As of June 2020, there were 294 independent breweries in Australia with 99 in New South Wales, 83 in Victoria and 47 in Queensland.

In 2018, it was reported there were nearly 90 brewers in Queensland.

Opening a boutique brewery was something the Adams had thought about for a while.

“Ipswich wasn’t the right place for it, there was already a brewery that was doing awesome, and we could have never competed with as a start-up,” Ms Adams said.

“We moved up here because it was close to Justin’s work, we wanted to be near the beach and it was beautiful here.

“After we moved here we thought that would be the perfect place for it.”

They decided to go for it and have spent the last 12 months methodically developing the business idea.

“We started planning, looking for a venue, Justin had done so much researching on gear and investments and put together a business plan,” Ms Adams.

In May, Mr Adams left his full-time job as an engineer and began the fit-out for the brewery.

After some challenges of getting a liquor license, securing equipment, finding grain and more hurdles that come with starting a business, they are getting very close to pouring their first batch.

The beer will be sold through wholesale to local restaurants and bars.

The Hidden Valley venue will also open as a taproom on weekends, with 10 beers on tap to choose from.

They will have a mixture of their own brewed beers, guest taps from other craft brewers, along with wine and cider.

“Pale ale, lagers, stout, English beer, German beers, sours, just about any beer you can think of,” Mr Adams said.

“At the minute we are just doing pilot batches so we can get a feel for what other people want and trying to come up with a core range of four beers that will be on tap all the time and have the other taps rotate.”

With no kitchen on-site, they plan to have local food trucks on a rotating schedule in the carpark.

They also hope to get involved with events around the region like the beer festival.

Inundated with positive responses on their social media, the pair have been blown away by the support of the Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast community.

Craft beer is not just something that is popular in CQ, Australia’s craft beer industry grew 6.2 per cent from 2015 to 2020 and is now worth more than $800m.

“We weren’t expecting it to be as well received as it was and received as much interest from people … we didn’t realise there was so many people that loved craft beer,” Ms Adams said.

“I think it’s the idea of something new … new venue, new product and it’s trendy.”
