More than 1000 dead fish, and possibly as many as 2000, have washed ashore at a popular Central Queensland beach, prompting one person to call it “such a waste.”

The trail of death extended for about 1km, at the Rosslyn Bay end of Yeppoon’s Kemp Beach, when seen by this publication just before sunset on Wednesday.

The trail was certainly a spectacle as it was effectively unbroken for the entire 1km length.

By Thursday morning, seagulls and other birds had dined out on the smorgasbord, reducing the scene somewhat.

The dead fish are likely bycatch, as trawlers have been seen working in Keppel Bay off Kemp Beach on numerous days this week.

It is understood that throwing overboard unintentionally caught fish, known as bycatch, is entirely legal.

When contacted by this publication and shown the photos, a Department of Environment and Science (DES) spokesman said this would be a matter for the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF).

That response from DES would indicate the fish kill was not caused by environmental factors.

DAF was contacted for comment and despite saying a response was being prepared, nothing was received.
