HIS own parent's business was the target of attack for this thief.

Daniel Charles Alick, 33, fronted Rockhampton Magistrates Court today after breaking a safe while stealing from his father's business and driving his car without authorisation in July this year.

The court heard Alick was living with his parents at the time of the offence and the business and home were on the same property.

The defendant entered the office of the business using a spare key he found even though his father had previously told him he wasn't allowed in there.

Once inside, Alick damaged the key pad of the safe while taking $130.

He also took the keys to a Toyota Landcruiser and drove off in it.

The entry was discovered by his brother when he entered the office and noticed things out of place.

The next day, Alick returned back to the home in the car he took, threw the keys at his brother and asked him to phone him a taxi.

When questioned by police, the defendant said he thought he was able to take the items, but declined a later interview.

Alick was on probation for drug charges at the time of the offence and has a minor criminal history featuring mainly drug related offences.

Defence solicitor Allan Grant told the court Alick acted impulsively as his girlfriend was seven months pregnant and having complications.

He also added his client, a mechanic and diesel fitter, had been living with his parents on-and-off.

Alick recieved 65 hours of community service to be completed in 12 months for committing wilful damage and unauthorised use of a motor vehicle.

For breaching his probation order he was fined $400.
