There are more than 80 jobs up for grabs across four McDonald’s fast food restaurants in the region.
Local licensee Anton Gazal is recruiting for a variety of full time, part time and casual employees across crew, management and barista roles in his Glenmore, Gracemere, Yeppoon and Rockhampton George Street stores.
There are also positions available for maintenance roles, which includes janitor duties, cleaning restaurant equipment and minor handyman responsibilities and maintaining all aspects internally and externally of the restaurants.
Mr Gazal said while the businesses were constantly hiring all year around, as they got closer to the end of the year with students moving away and towards the “silly season”, they needed to beef-up their numbers.
“We are always looking for people from maintenance, management, McCafe,” Mr Gazal said.
Mr Gazal said there was always interest from people wanting to work at McDonald’s and he received around 15 applicants a month, hiring around 80 per cent of those who applied.
“It’s an endless cycle, hiring, training, getting them in the store,” he said.
The day crew, in school hours, was the hardest to recruit, he said.
McDonald’s has a big workforce with mixed demographics.
“One 15 year old might only have one, four-hour shift on weekends and another 40 year old might work full-time,” Mr Gazal said.
“We’re a proud employer of all ages and we have very flexible circumstances and are always happy to give them a go.”
Upgrades are underway at the George Street store, with construction of a dual-lane drive-through and upgrades to the kitchen.
The Glenmore restaurant will also undergo some upgrades next year with the back half of the store extended for storage, to accommodate more goods as a dual-lane drive through will also be constructed there.
“It’s been a tough year, we are doing the expansions and backing the future of this town,” Mr Gazal said.
The expansions also mean there is a further need for more staff.
“We haven’t stopped hiring in the last year, we are increasing our numbers on top of the works,” Mr Gazal said.
“With the dual-lane drive-through it means we have four people doing the ordering and the food instead of two, and there is more food to be made and stored.”
As an iconic brand that is well regarded for its training, McDonald’s is a very appealing job on resumes for future employers.
The company even even offers certificates II and III in retail services and a food safety supervision certificate.
“We are always everyone’s first jobs, from 14 there is not many places that hire,” Mr Gazal said.
“It’s a great little community …. The training we do is second to none, it allows people to learn and grow, a very clear path.”
McDonald’s serves more than 1.7 million customers each day across its 990 Australian restaurants with more than 100,000 employees.
Mr Gazal took over the George Street store in June 2020, buying it from long-time operator Gary St George.
Mr St George bought the South Rockhampton store in 1989 and built the Glenmore and Yeppoon stores, later selling them to Mr Gazal, and building the Gracemere store in 2000s.
In a previous life, before he owned McDonald’s, Mr Gazal worked as a radiographer in Sydney.
He is also passionate about supporting the Ronald McDonald House charities and played an instrumental role in organising the iconic and successful Rocky River Run.
The annual run raised $27,000 in the 2021 event for the North Queensland House.
