Kalari lodges DA for new mining chemical storage in Bowen Basin in Central Highlands

A proposed chemical storage site could soon servicing several Bowen Basin mines, with up to 2400 tonnes of ammonium nitrate prill stored and shared among sites.
A development application has been lodged by Kalari Pty Ltd c-/ Reel Planning with the Central Highlands Regional Council, seeking to set up the storage hub about 3km from the intersection of Boolburra-Edungalba Road and the Capricorn Highway.
The hub would store the chemical for Bowen Basin mines including Blackwater, Peak Downs, and Saraji.
The material would be transported to the facility from two manufacturing facilities, Orica Yarwun and Queensland Nitrate Moura.
There is no planned manufacturing or processing of ammonium nitrate prill on the development site.
The site is a large and predominantly vacant rural allotment covering an area of 63.881ha, and is dissected by Boolburra-Edungalba Road.
It also contains an unoccupied dwelling.
The plan will include a yard area of about 2.1 hectares to store the chemicals, featuring an internal access track and a security fence t at least 2.45m high and a minimum of 20m from the ammonium nitrate storage.
The ammonium nitrate will be kept in purpose-built shipping containers and placed in the middle of the yard in groups of 10.
There will also be a modest bagging area, parking location for a forklift, area for firefighting facilities and equipment, and a loading and unloading area.
An amenities building is to be included to the south of the yard area and is to contain administration, toilets, and break room buildings.
A sediment dam will also be made west of the yard area for stormwater quantity management measure.
On-site operators are proposed to include a forklift operator seven days a week and an unspecified number of truck drivers working mostly daytime hours.
Road access to the centre is suggest from Boolburrasite, Edungalba Road, using the existing intersection with the Capricorn Highway.
