Father-of-four is undergoing new round of tests, including PET scan, at Brisbane hospital

Specialists are still trying to solve the medical mystery that has threatened the life of the Rockhampton father-of-four Mark Briggs and kept him in hospital for almost eight weeks.

Mark Briggs remains in intensive care but is showing some signs of improvement, according to his wife Sam.

Specialists are still trying to solve the medical mystery that has threatened the life of the Rockhampton father-of-four and kept him in hospital for almost eight weeks.

Mark was transferred from the Rockhampton Hospital to The Wesley Hospital in Brisbane on Sunday morning.

Sam said Mark was initially in the coronary care ward but tests, which included an ECG, revealed some valve dysfunction including three leaking valves, which meant he was moved to the ICU.

“He’s going for a PET scan on Wednesday,” she said.

“He’s had a heap of different blood tests done again down here, he had another CT scan and ultrasounds again on the DVTs in his legs and his left arm.

“He’s not intubated anymore, they took that out in Rocky because it’s easier to transport when he’s not intubated, but he’s still on high flow so breathing assistance.

“He hasn’t had temperatures for the last three days which is a first because the whole way along he has had temperatures.

“They’re saying his lungs are improving which is good, and he did have some kidney injury from when he had sepsis the last time but that seems to be resolving as well.

“There’s lots of good stuff but his heart’s still in atrial fibrillation; it’s beating out of rhythm and fast. His BP is still way up even though they’ve got him on three medications to try to sort that out.”

Sam said Mark seemed to be feeling a little better within himself.

“He’s still coming to terms with everything and the changes to his body, but he seems a little bit happier today,” she said on Tuesday.

“He slept a lot yesterday and he slept well overnight which always helps his mood.

“I think he’s feeling okay… well, the best he can be.”
