The death of darts champion Kyle ‘The Original’ Anderson has shock and sadness reverberating through the global darts community.
Anderson died on Tuesday, aged 33.
The Central Queensland sportsman was a popular figure within the Professional Darts Corporation, where he played from 2012 to 2020.
The PDC posted tributes to Anderson on its Facebook page, which was flooded with hundreds of condolence messages.
It described him as a “vibrant character on and off the oche” and a “true trailblazer for the sport”.
The Sportsman Management Company, which represented Anderson, described the news as “heartbreaking and devastating”
“We have lost one of our family,” its Facebook post read.
“Kyle was one of the nicest people you could ever meet. One of the biggest hearts you will ever find with so much love in it.
“You made us laugh more than you will ever know. No star will shine brighter in the sky than yours.”
Anderson relocated to the United Kingdom in 2014 to compete on the PDC circuit, becoming the first Indigenous Australian full-time professional player.
He returned to Australia in March 2020 and in April tested positive to Covid, spending four weeks in isolation at his in-laws’ property in Mount Morgan.
He gave up his PDC Tour card this year.
A much-loved and highly regarded competitor, Anderson had an extraordinary career.
He competed in seven world championships and was one of only eight players to hit a nine-dart finish at the PDC World Championship.
He claimed the 2017 Auckland Darts Masters in 2017, the first Australian to win a World Series title.
