The CQ Capras women are poised to lock in an NRLW and Maroons Origin star for the 2022 season.
Coach Amanda Ohl remains tight-lipped on the player’s identity, saying it was “exciting times, with a number of signings from outside the area yet to be announced”.
More than 20 players are expected at the women’s first training camp in Rockhampton this weekend, including a core group which has been part of the squad for the past two years.
The Capras can have an unlimited number in their training squad but there are only 25 contracts on offer.
“We should have about 22 players at the camp which for us is a great number,” Ohl said.
“I’m hoping this squad comes together really quickly.
“Our numbers and our depth this time will be stronger than we’ve ever had.
“This year, we went through the season with 19 girls and we’ve already got 27 in the 2022 squad.
“I’m expecting to have girls from Rockhampton and Gladstone come in and train with us so we could end up with as many as 40.”
The Capras have secured the services of Pani Rupapere, a Central Queensland product who played with the North Queensland Gold Stars this year.
Ohl said she would start at six or seven, with her halves partner yet to be determined.
“Pani’s positive, full of energy and she’s a great communicator,” she said.
“She’s excited to be back in the CQ area.
“She’ll be very important for us this year. She will be the player who puts us in the right place at the right time.”
