CQ Capras’ duo Trey Brown and Bailey Butler have capped stellar seasons with inclusion in the 2023 Hostplus Cup Team of the Year.
Brown was named at hooker and Butler at prop in the quality line-up announced at the Queensland Rugby League Awards lunch at Brisbane City Hall.
Rockhampton’s classy fullback Tamika Upton won the Annie Banks Medal for Queensland’s Player of the Year in the women’s State of Origin series.
Brown and Butler were instrumental in getting the Capras to the preliminary final for the first time since 2009.
They put in a spirited showing, only to be beaten 14-6 by the Brisbane Tigers, who take on the Burleigh Bears in Sunday’s grand final.
Brown also finished equal second on the Petero Civoniceva Medal tally for the competition’s best and fairest, three points behind winner Trai Fuller from the Redcliffe Dolphins.
Capras coach Lionel Harbin said he was “really happy and proud” of Brown and Butler.
“Both players have had great individual seasons and were a big part of why the team went well this year,” he said.
Harbin said Brown, who debuted with the Capras in June 2019, was getting better every year.
“This season was definitely his best; he was more consistent with his performances,” he said.
“The exciting thing with Trey is there is still plenty of room for improvement. He is only just scratching the surface in terms of developing his all-round game at number nine.”
Harbin said Butler, off the back of a solid pre-season with the Dolphins and selection in the Indigenous All Stars, started the season in really good form and continued that on throughout the year.
“He is a no-nonsense type of player,” he said.
“He leads with his actions and I think the biggest compliment you can give him is that the rest of the team love playing with him.”
