The CQ Capras are just one win away from Q-Cup’s big dance after their commanding win in Sunday’s elimination semi-final.
Buoyed by about 3000 passionate fans at their spiritual home of Browne Park, the Capras scored eight tries to one in their 38-10 demolition of the Sunshine Coast Falcons.
They are now into the preliminary final for the first time in 14 years, where they will meet the Brisbane Tigers next Sunday.
The Capras found themselves down by four points after conceding two penalties in the opening five minutes.
But once their response came through a spectacular acrobatic try from winger Tom Farr in the 23rd minute, it was all one-way traffic.
Centre Cooper Marshall and fullback Blake Moore both crossed to put the Capras up 14-4 at the break.
Winger Brandon Roberts scored in the eighth minute of the second half and the floodgates opened.
Zev John, JJ Collins and Larson Dale-Doyle also got in on the action, while Moore crossed for his second.
In a salute to the Capras’ stoic defensive effort, the Falcons only other points of the game came from a consolation try to five-eighth Luke Polselli in the shadow of full-time.
Capras’ hooker Trey Brown, who was Player of the Match, said defence had been a focus all season and the scramble and effort against the Falcons was excellent.
“We’re one win away from the big one,” he said.
“These guys… what a squad, what a team.
“It’s been a different journey this year. We’ve had 25 players play; the squad depth’s been tested but every single person comes in and just does their job and we’re reaping the rewards for some really hard work earlier in the year.”
The modest number nine was quick to acknowledge the efforts of forwards Bailey Butler and JJ Collins who, he said, were “unstoppable up front” and made his job so much easier.
Brown said it was great to get the win at Browne Park, which is set to undergo a multi-million redevelopment.
“It’s really special to do it, this is the last game at Browne Park as we know it,” he said.
“Huge credit to this crowd - they create an atmosphere that’s unmatched.
“You could see Sunny Coast were really struggling to get into the game once the crowd kicked in.”
