CQ Capras beat Souths Logan to move into Hostplus Cup top four

Heartened by the ‘real level of commitment’ shown by his players in the win over Souths Logan, CQ Capras coach Lionel Harbin is now waiting to see if it was enough to secure a place in the top four and a double bite at the finals cherry.

The CQ Capras’ finals fate hangs on one result this afternoon after their thrilling win over Souths Logan Magpies put them in contention for a top-four finish in the Hostplus Cup.

They will move into the top four if Brisbane Tigers beat Wynnum Manly in the last game of the regular season later today.

The Capras showed plenty of character in their 18-14 win over the Magpies, who were leading the competition and hunting the minor premiership in their Saturday showdown at Browne Park.

They conceded a try in the seventh minute and trailed by two points at half-time, but produced one of their most memorable performances of the season to seal the win.

The scenario for them is this if the Sunday result goes their way - they’ll either play Burleigh Bears away or the Sunshine Coast Falcons at home.

Capras head coach Lionel Harbin said his players showed plenty of fight, especially after losing backrower Nicholas Halalilo to injury in the opening minutes of the contest.

“It was a really good win,” he said.

“The boys just showed a real level of commitment yesterday.

“We wanted to be a lot better defensively, and we were.”

Harbin was impressed with the way his team continually repelled the attack of the Magpies, who had a glut of possession in the first half.

“We had to go back to what’s worked for us all year and that’s going through the middle of teams and using our forwards,” he said.

“Once we were able to do that, we got points off the back of it in the second half.”

Winger Tom Farr bagged a double, while prop Bailey Butler scored the Capras’ third try.

Backrowers Zev John and Nixon Putt were tireless and key to the Capras go-forward, while Blake Moore was outstanding at fullback.

Harbin said it was a good finals rehearsal for the Capras.

“It’s really good to get some momentum going towards the finals,” he said.

“We know when we play at our best we can compete with any team so it’s just a matter of making sure we’re preparing well and playing our best footy.”
