Connor Broadhurst to play with Norths Devils in Intrust Super Cup grand final

Connor Broadhurst will be looking to score a second Intrust Super Cup title when he takes the field with the Norths Devils this weekend.

Central Queensland product Connor Broadhurst will be gunning for his second Intrust Super Cup title this weekend,

The 27-year-old will line up in the halves for the Norths Devils who take on Wynnum Manly in Sunday’s decider.

The Devils booked their place with a 34-16 win over the Burleigh Bears in the semi-final, a performance Broadhurst said had instilled a “lot of confidence” in the playing group.

Broadhurst has made the switch from centre to the halves this season, a positional change that he’s embraced.

“We had a few injuries to the halves so I’ve played five-eighth since round seven pretty much,” he said.

“I thought I was playing my best season so far at centre for the first six rounds. I was on top of the stats for most things for a centre - I was leading the run metres, runs, post contact metres for the competition.

“I was averaging over 200m a game but then had to switch positions. It took me a game or two to get into it but I think I’ve been playing quite well.

“I haven’t played (in the halves) since I was in high school but I enjoy being closer to the action and getting my hands on the ball a lot more.”

Broadhurst is hopeful a strong showing this weekend will take him a step closer to the NRL, a dream he’s been pursuing since he first took the field as a junior with the Baralaba Panthers.

“Central Queensland is rugby league heartland. It’s what you grow up on, that was what the weekends were for - rugby league,” he said.

“I grew up around it, everybody loved it, everybody played it.

“Obviously there’s a fair few players who have made it from CQ. They’ve forged the pathway to the higher level.

“It’s still the goal (for me) to get to the NRL. I want to put in another good performance and win on the weekend and see what happens.”

Broadhurst, who played with the CQ Capras in 2018, played with the Burleigh Bears who won the title in 2016.

He believes he can claim his second with the Devils this weekend, and his halves pairing with Tyrone Roberts will be all-important.

“I pride myself on defence but I’d like to showcase a bit more attack in this game,” he said.

“Defence will be key. I think the more we can hold them out or limit the points or impact of their strike players, it goes a long way to winning the game.

“On the other side, the more we’re completing and getting through our sets and not giving them any cheap penalties or making stupid errors the better our chances will be.”

Sunday’s final kicks off at 3.10pm at Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe.
