A Townsville commercial aquatic construction company has been awarded the $5,349,157 tender for the new aquatic centre at Mount Morgan.

TP Aquatic Constructions, a company of Taylor Builders, were awarded the tender for the design and construction and have already begun pre-construction work.

The company’s previous projects include a water park at Australia Zoo, water slide park at Big4 Resort at the Whitsundays, swimming pool complexes at Jericho and Tennant Creek, leisure centre and water slides at the Northern Beaches and aquatic facility at Nanango.

“Taylor Builders are a very experienced pool builder specialising in remote and regional pools which is perfect for the Mount Morgan pool redevelopment project,” Rockhampton Regional Council mayor Tony Williams said.

“The tender went through our rigorous, multi-criteria analysis and Taylor Builders was selected by the panel as the best overall option.”

The pool has been closed since July 1, 2022 as the pool had been leaking quite significantly and was at end of life.

TP Aquatic Constructions is now working on the detailed design, taking on board feedback from the community consultation in November last year, and will also meet competition criteria.

The design is expected to include a new pool that is 25 metres with eight lanes, 900mm to 1350 depth, wet deck, tiled concourse, entry ladders, starting blocks and accessibility, splash pad and wet play area along with ancillary buildings like a new plant shed, change rooms, amenities and an entry kiosk and shade structures.

“This means the kids of Mount Morgan will have more opportunity and be able to train in the same standard of facility that their competition does,” Mr Williams said.

“The new facility will also be fully accessible for people with disabilities, opening up more options for exercise and recreation for everyone in the community.”

Divisional councillor and portfolio holder for Parks, Sport and Public Spaces, Cherie Rutherford, said the new pool would be quite the upgrade from the previous pool.

“Stay tuned as we will be releasing more information on the design and how the community’s feedback shaped this in the coming weeks,” she said.

The project has been supported with $4.5 million from the state government’s Resources Community Infrastructure Fund, and $2 million from council’s own funds.

“Local families will be able to use the upgraded pool in Mount Morgan and enjoy the best of the world-class lifestyle we have here in regional Queensland,” Keppel MP Brittany Lauga said.

It has been previously reported the construction was expected to take 12 months, indicating the new facility could be open in mid-2024.

Another update was also provided in a council report this month on the Mount Morgan Pipeline project.

The first order for pipes, fittings and valves for the supply trunk mains has been placed and an evaluation is underway for the design and construction tenders.

A temporary work site will be set up on the land on Lucas Street owned by Education Queensland.
