Queensland’s Rockynats event is best known for its high octane fun – but it also boasted one of the best collection of mullets seen in Australia on the weekend.
From red-haired kids with long locks to a new bride who has been growing her mullet for just under a year, there were some extreme mullets on show.
Mullets were paraded on stage at the Burnouts Precinct with entrants giving spectators insight into how they care for their luscious locks.
Extreme Muller winner Hannah Fox has been growing her mullet for just under a year, starting the process just a month after her wedding.
“I shaved my head about seven years ago for World’s Greatest Shave, grew it out for my wedding … dyed it red, then about a month after my wedding I so badly wanted a mullet,” she said.
“I got it cut at a barber, it wasn’t mullety enough and it was too long, so I went home and did it myself and chopped the top off a little bit.
“Dyed my eyebrows, because I had a dream, and got the sideburns right.”
Ms Fox detailed some of the DIY maintenance that goes into looking after her extreme mullet.
“I’m real bad with washing it, so it gets nice and greasy, you know proper mullet style,” she said.
“I just cut it every four weeks, when the fringe starts to get too low into my eyes and covering my brows I cut it myself in the bathroom, watch a YouTube video.
“If you cut it bad it’s just for two weeks and then it looks fine anyway.”
Ms Fox said she has future plans for the mullet with ideas for a colour change and goal length.
‘I WANT TO GROW IT TO MY BUTT’
“I want to grow it to my butt, because I think that would just be glorious,” she said.
“I’m thinking green next, like a real mermaid green.”
Mulletfest organiser Laura Johnson said she was thrilled with the entries for the adult competition, with last year’s Ranga category winner defending his title.
“There’s also new hair in the game, with new entrants growing mullets just for the Rockynats competition and heading for the Rookie title,” she said.
The vintage mullet category was won by Racheal Jensen, Hannah Fox won the extreme mullet category, Killean Kavanagh took out the Rookie mullet title, Ethan Robertson and Kody Bond were joint winners for the everyday mullet, Reuben Livingstone’s mane took out the grubby mullet title and Alan Pitt defended the title for Ranga mullet.
The mullet action continued on Sunday with the junior mulletfest.
Before the mullets were paraded on stage we caught up with the entrants to feature in our people’s choice poll.
