The CapriCon Steampunk and Pop Culture Convention set to take place on August 28 has been cancelled.
Rockhampton Mayor Tony Williams said the council made the decision this week.
“In light of the extended NSW and South East Queensland lockdowns and current QLD border closure, we cannot deliver the 2021 CapriCon program, with key Steampunk and Pop Culture entertainment and stall holders coming from outside the region,” he said.
“This is very disappointing for all involved especially the community who have supported this growing major event on our calendar.
“Council cannot in good faith continue to plan and deliver our 5th anniversary event to the standard our attendees expect without these key guests and exhibitors.
“To reduce the impact on all guests, sponsors, attendees and exhibitors we have needed to make the tough decision to cancel four weeks out.”
Advance Rockhampton’s tourism and events manager Annette Pearce said the CapriCon Events Team was currently working on other events for the region’s pop culture community.
“CapriCon has grown to become a huge part of our community so we understand how much this cancellation affects our local cosplayers and exhibitors who have been preparing for the event,” she said.
“We are currently exploring other event opportunities for our CapriCon stakeholders and hope they understand we are doing everything we can to support pop culture in our community.”
Advance Rockhampton executive manager Greg Bowden said one possibility was to include pop culture in the Rockhampton River Festival, to be held from October 22 to 24.
“Our headline act, along with a number of vendors, are from interstate, and we can no longer wait to see and try and replace those people,” he said.
“For those CapriCon fans out there, and those that were looking to attend that event, we are working hard to introduce some sort of pop culture event within the River Festival which was announced last week to be held in October this year.”
He said 15,000 people were expected at this year’s CapriCon.
