Federal Member for Flynn Colin Boyce has won his re-election bid, but has called the LNP campaign a “train wreck”.

As of 12.15pm on Sunday May 4, Mr Boyce has 34.91 per cent of the vote with 70.36 per cent of ballots in the Flynn electorate counted.

Mr Boyce is currently enjoy a 4.73 per cent swing in the Two-Party Preferred count with 58.55 per cent against Labor’s Helen Madell at 41.45 per cent.

Despite the victory, it is clear Mr Boyce is far from pleased with the LNP showing on the national level.

“Obviously it is a result that wasn’t expected in respect to the wider conservative vote,” he said.

“It was a resounding win by the Labor Party and a train wreck of a campaign by the Liberal National Coalition.”

Mr Boyce said he thinks a lot of LNP policy that was set during the election was “policy on the run” and lacked coherence.

“Capital gains, that could have been done a lot better. The whole nuclear argument could have been done a lot better,” he said.

“They got tied up in meaningless conversations about all number of issues instead of having some coherent policy.”

Mr Boyce said if Australia continues on its policy of 82 per cent of renewables by 2030 and 100 per cent renewable energy by 2050, Australia risks following the path of Spain which has recently suffered from nationwide blackouts.

Going into parliament Mr Boyce plans to advocate for a rethink of Australia’s future energy policies.

“I imagine the Labor Government will totally reject nuclear energy outright and that is just a tragedy for future Australians given the fact that many industrial countries around the world rely heavily on nuclear energy,” he said.

“We should be exploring that option here in Australia.”

Despite the national loss for the LNP, Mr Boyce is grateful to the Flynn voters.

“I thank them for their continuing support and obviously they see me as a good advocate for them, particularly the blue collar workers,” he said.

“The wider Flynn electorate and wider Central Queensland is one of the great economic engine rooms of Australia and that’s what I’ll continue to represent.”
