Five days before a Rockhampton mother was sentenced for her role in supplying drugs to a Capricornia Correctional Centre inmate, her house was searched in relation to another crime and busted with bags of drugs.

Caytlin Rose A’Herne, 32, was sentenced in the Supreme Court on May 23, 2023, for her role in collecting and packaging the drugs for the prison drug supply after she was intercepted at Rockhampton Hospital in March 2022.

A’Herne pleaded guilty to two counts of supplying a dangerous drug to a prisoner, three of possessing drug utensils and one count of possessing anything used in a crime.

She received two years’ prison, with parole release after serving 159 days, which was pre-sentence custody declared as time already served.

Five days earlier, police searched her Berserker residence in relation to another matter, police prosecutor Senior Constable Caitlin Booker told Rockhampton Magistrates Court on August 18.

She said A’Herne was not home when police found a bag in the recycling bin at the rear of the residence which contained two cooler bags concealing drugs, prescription medications, 15 mobile phones, a tablet, a toy gun, a taser and a laser pointer.

Snr Const Booker said the bags contained 17 grams of marijuana, six buprenorphine strips, 20 30ml tablets of the antidepressant medication Temazepam, 10 vials of a substance that “rapidly reverses opioid overdoses”, along with bank cards and what looked like a tick sheet.

Defence lawyer Samantha Legrady said her client, a mother of two, had placed the items in the bin as she did not want them in the house.

She said A’Herne had started smoking marijuana when she was 15 and moved onto methamphetamines.

“At the peak of her addiction, she was smoking two to three points a day,” Ms Legrady said.

She said A’Herne had received a huge wake up call when she served the pre-sentence custody for the supply offence and was turning her life around, getting help for her addiction and mental health.

Ms Legrady said her client was now her father’s carer after he was diagnosed with emphysema and bowel cancer.

“She does understand she is on thin ice,” she said.

A’Herne pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing a schedule four medicine, two of possessing a dangerous drug, one of possessing suspected stolen property, one of possessing drug utensils, one of possessing restricted items and one of possessing a weapon.

Magistrate Grace Kalhert placed her on an 18-month probation order and fined her $800.

Convictions were recorded.
