Expat's 'crazy' problem with Aussie coffee

Coffee lovers will rejoice as a fifth coffee drive-thru is set to be built in the Beef Capital.

A Coffee Club drive-thru will open at the former Rockhampton Bunnings site on Yaamba Road, marking the third store in Rockhampton for the national franchise.

A fast food drive-thru outlet on the southwestern of the site was approved by Rockhampton Regional Council in 2021.

Under the approved plans, the 2000 sqm site would take up 50 of the existing car parks.

A new crossover will be built as the site will have entry and exit only access points.

The building would have a 247 sqm gross floor area and indoor dining.

When the plans were approved, no tenant had been selected and leasing enquiries were advertised in 2021.

The huge former Bunnings warehouse building would not be affected by the development

The whole site is owned by Coles which bought it in 2018 for $9.9 million, after Bunnings relocated further up the road.

Builders are now tendering for the construction of the project, with tenders due to close on June 10.

Works are expected to start as soon as practically possible, depending on the successful tenderer and supplies.

The Coffee Club company started in 1989 with a store in Brisbane and has now grown to 296 stores across Australia, 60 in New Zealand, 29 in Thailand and a handful of stores in the Middle East, Malaysia, Indonesia and Maldives.

The brand has been in Rockhampton since 2007.

The first store was on George Street (where Pattysmiths is), which closed in 2017.

The brand’s restaurant at Empire Apartments on Victoria Parade in the Rockhampton CBD opened in 2014 and the Stockland Rockhampton store opened in 2009 and underwent a major facelift in 2020.

There is also a Coffee Club at Yeppoon Central.

Under the franchising opportunities on the Coffee Club website, Rockhampton is listed as an available site along with a Yeppoon site.
