Construction on ancillary infrastructure including a Coal Handling and Preparation Plant and rail loop for a new major coal mine could begin next year if a new application gets approved by the Federal Government.

A referral for ancillary infrastructure for the Vitrinite Vulcan Mine was recently lodged with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water under the Environmental Protection and Biosecurity Conservation Act.

Mining company Vitrinite was granted a mining lease in September last year for its $160 million Vulcan Mine which is to be built between Dysart and Moranbah.

The project is also expected to create up to 150 full-time jobs.

According to the referral document construction of the project could start as early as June next year.

According to the document the infrastructure would include a new CHPP, rail loop and train load out.

The document says the CHPP would be an “open steel structure” with three circuits.

The coal will be processed through the CHPP to produce metallurgical and thermal coal.

The referral document says the TLO facility would transport coal processed on site to market, with the rail look to connect to the existing network in the southeast of the mining lease.

As well as new rail tracks, new controlled level crossings are proposed to be built where the rail will cross Saraji Rd.

The referral document says coal will be transported from the mine using the Goonyella Rail network with export option including Dalrymple Bay and the RG Tanna terminal in Gladstone, resulting in a reduction of heavy vehicles on the road.

The transport of coal from the mine by rail is expected to reduce heavy vehicle traffic on Saraji Rd and the Peak Downs Highway by an average of 80 truck movements every 24 hours.

The referral says an explosive magazine, which was formerly proposed for the site, will now be located off-lease as it cannot be accommodated within the necessary exclusions zones around the new infrastructure.

According to the referral document, construction will require a workforce of about 130 people for a period of 18 months.
