Bizarre Ikea Rockhampton rumour debunked: Is the retailer coming to the city?

It is one of the region’s most desired businesses, alongside Krispy Kreme and Costco

In a bizarre listing, the words “Ikea Rockhampton (Coming Soon)” have been added to Google Maps for the site of the former Bunnings Warehouse on Yaamba Road in North Rockhampton.

The Morning Bulletin came across the notice this week and immediately contacted Ikea Australia which was just as perplexed as us.

Ikea stated the listing was incorrect and it would amend it.

“While Ikea is always exploring opportunities to expand and be more accessible to more people, we do not currently have confirmed plans to open a store or expand our service offering to Rockhampton,” Ikea’s statement read.

The Bunnings building has been vacant since March 2018 when the hardware giant moved up the road.

The property sold in November 2018 to a Sydney-based company for $9.9 million.

A fast food outlet was approved by council earlier this year to be built on the southwestern corner of the site.

The tenant for the outlet has not been revealed however it has been approved for a drive-thru, indoor dining and to operate 24/7.
