A man living near a fire that consumed an industrial shed in Rockhampton City said he heard a motorbike and large bang before the blaze began.
Local fishmonger Gavin said he heard strange noises in the middle of the night and came out to investigate, leading him to stumble across the fire.
“I heard a motorbike about 2am,” he said.
“And then I heard a bang - I thought it was thunder.
“No clouds in the sky, so I got up... I thought somebody was breaking into my truck.
“I heard the sirens around 3am.”
Emergency services raced to the scene of a major fire in Quay Street early this morning where a building was completely engulfed and collapsed on itself.
The fire also caused an outage between 4.18am and 6am, impacting 405 people.
The fire is being treated as suspicious and road closures are in place at Derby Street and Quay Street.
A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said they first attended the site about 3.20am on Monday, December 9 after receiving reports of a large warehouse on fire.
The building suffered a structural collapse during the course of the blaze, with all four sides collapsing.
As a result, firefighters had to put out the fire from outside the property.
The fire was extinguished at 5am and a fire investigator will be attending later today.
Paramedics remained on standby for multiple hours at the fire, but no patients were reported and crews left the scene at 5.20am.
