A boatie has been rescued from the wreckage of a trimaran which smashed against rocks on an island off Stanage, north of Rockhampton, early Saturday.

It comes after a distress beacon sparked a search.

Rockhampton based helicopter rescue service CapRescue was called by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority about 3am for a search around Shoalwater Bay after an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) was activated on the trimaran.

According to CapRescue, the service had limited information as the owner of the EPIRB did not have communications with emergency services.

Rescue300 flew about 80nm to South Barron Island where the signal originated from and found the trimaran wrecked on rocks and being “buffeted by swell”, the service said in a statement.

Because there was nowhere to land, the chopper hovered over the rocks so the crewman could be lowered down to the yacht, rescuing the patient and winching them to safety.

The patient was treated by the on-board Critical Care Paramedic and was stable throughout the flight to Mackay.
