A young motorsports competitor has lost his driver’s licence for 6.5 years after being busted using Rockhampton roads like a racetrack while disqualified from driving.

Bailey Jay De Landelles Barnicoat, 19, had an “atrocious” traffic record before he fronted Rockhampton Magistrates Court for his dangerous driving on October 23, police prosecutor Tiffany Moras said.

She said the defendant was “very lucky” no one was injured as a result of his dangerous driving.

De Landelles Barnicoat came to the attention of police due his revving the engine while stopped at the traffic lights at the Norman Rd/Farm St intersection in Norman Gardens at 3.05pm on July 17.

The excessive revving caused the rear wheels to lose traction and fishtail before speeding off towards Dean St, Frenchville.

Police attempted to intercept the vehicle as it wove through traffic, causing many vehicles to veer off the road to avoid collision.

They observed the blue Ford sedan weave through traffic and enter the pick up/drop off area at the Lighthouse Christian College as students were being picked up at the end of the school day.

The Ford turned on to Frenchville Rd and out of police sight until members of the public pointed police to Eichelberger St where witnesses saw the Ford fishtailing again.

Police patrolled the area and spotted it again, merging from Watt St on to Frenchville Rd.

Police contacted De Landelles Barnicoat the next day and he voluntarily attended the police station where he was arrested and charged.

Ms Moras said the defendant had been disqualified from driving for two years in Rockhampton Magistrates Court on November 13, 2022.

Defence lawyer David Mills provided four references to the court from people who “participate in the car driving industry”.

“That may explain his exuberance when he is not on the track and when he’s on the public thoroughfare,” he said.

“I think he panicked more so than anything else.”

Mr Mills said his client was an apprentice electrician who had taken six months off work due to an infected wound from a dog bite.

“That’s when this offending happened,” he said.

De Landelles Barnicoat pleaded guilty to one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evasion and driving while licensed disqualified by the court.

Magistrate Philippa Beckinsale ordered him to pay a $7740 mandatory fine for the evasion offence and disqualified him from driving for a further 4.5 years with traffic convictions recorded.
