The victim of Tuesday’s fatal crash at Pink Lily has been identified as Horst Dargel, a highly regarded and trailblazing businessman.

The 92-year-old was a pioneer in tropical fruit tree production and unique propagation techniques and was co-founder of Fitzroy Nurseries, which was created in February 1953.

The business, at Pink Lily, is today run by Mr Dargel’s family and employs 40 staff.

Mr Dargel is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He died after sustaining critical injuries in a single-vehicle crash just west of Rockhampton on Tuesday morning.

Paramedics received an emergency call just before 10am to Six Mile Road, Pink Lily.

Mr Dargel was treated by paramedics, including a critical care paramedic, and taken to Rockhampton Hospital where he sadly later died.

It appears he was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Early police investigations indicate Mr Dargel was driving a red Toyota Corolla and it crashed into a tree, causing it to roll.

Crash investigations are ongoing and anyone who has footage of or witnessed the crash are encouraged to call police.
