REVEALED: SEQ’s cheapest and most expensive petrol prices

As a fuel expert warns record fuel prices won’t drop for weeks, we’ve found where you can still buy relatively cheap petrol and how much it will cost to fill your car up.

Australians predicted to spend up to an extra $12 billion on petrol this year

As fuel prices soar to record highs, a fuel expert has warned it could be weeks before the cost of fuel falls again.

One of the main reasons fuel prices have increased is due to the sanctions the West has imposed on Russia in response to their invasion.

RACQ fuel expert Ian Jeffreys said the sanctions has limited Russia selling oil to the international market and therefore reduced the amount of oil available.

“When demand outstretches supply, the price goes up,” Mr Jeffreys said.

“That’s why we’re seeing those higher prices right now”.

According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the wholesale price of unleaded petrol in Brisbane has increased from 178.3c per litre to 196.3c per litre in just five days.

The other reason petrol is so expensive at the moment comes down to the regular fuel price cycle which occurs in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and the other large capitals.

“We are moving into the most expensive phase of the fuel cycle,” Mr Jeffreys said.

“Sitting under this fuel cycle is the oil price.

“The oil price at the moment is at record highs in Australian dollar terms and close to record highs in US dollar terms.”

Mr Jeffreys predicts prices should fall within the next four weeks to the $1.90 range.

To save money, motorists are being encouraged to shop around and use resources, like the RACQ fair fuel finder app, to search out cheap petrol.

“By shopping around besides helping ourselves, we’re also helping everyone else in driving that competition down, making fuel companies lower their price to get our business”.
