The federal Coalition has gone into election campaign battle mode early, with MPs hitting the phones to voters in a direct appeal for support.
Retiring Gold Coast MP Karen Andrews has begun cold-calling constituents in her southern Glitter Strip electorate of McPherson to rally votes ahead of the 2025 poll which will be held no later than May.
McPherson voters received a voice message from Ms Andrews this week about her “local plan for a stronger future”.
She urged voters to visit her website or call her office “if you’ve got any questions, particularly about the upcoming election”.
Speaking to Sky News earlier this month, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the election would be held some time between March and May.
It comes amid a shocking poll result for Mr Albanese released on Wednesday.
The Redbridge poll found almost half of all voters think the country is headed in the wrong direction. Less than a third think it is on the right track.
Ms Andrews, who served as a minister in the former Morrison government, announced last year that she would retire at the next election after 15 years in parliament.
She stepped down as shadow minister for home affairs after announcing her retirement, as part of a frontbench reshuffle by Peter Dutton.
Solicitor Leon Rebello, who previously worked for former Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, has been preselected as the LNP candidate for McPherson.
