THE "Robinson Crusoe" of Queensland's Restoration Island faces eviction from his remote tropical paradise after losing a Supreme Court legal case.
David Glasheen, who has lived alone on the island off Cape York Peninsula since 1993, made international headlines four years ago, when he went online looking for a "Girl Friday" to live with him.
Mr Glasheen, a former Sydney businessman who lost his millions in the 1987 stock market crash, had been sub-leased 1.53ha of the island by leaseholder Restoration Island Pty Ltd.
That company was granted a special 50-year lease from the Crown in 1989, on condition that it develop tourist accommodation and recreational and commercial fishing facilities valued at least $200,000.
But a Supreme Court judgment said Mr Glasheen had not taken steps to develop a resort, and that since 2000, Restoration Island's directors had been trying to get Mr Glasheen to vacate the island.
On Thursday, Justice Henry ordered that the land could be repossessed from Mr Glasheen. He is considering appealing the decision.
