A Queensland teenager has captured incredible footage of a rare white humpback whale swimming off the New South Wales coast with its young.

Brayden Blake, 16, was holidaying at Fingal Head when he spotted the white whale about 500 metres off the shoreline on Thursday.

Up to six calves can be seen swimming alongside the mother, which has raised the question of whether Migaloo -the famous white humpback whale known to frequent the east coast- has given birth recently.

But marine expert Dr Wally Franklin told 9News he thinks the rare sighting could indicate a new albino white whale has entered Migaloos territory.

“This is the first time that I’ve been able to say that the white whale I’m looking at could be a white whale other than Migaloo,” Dr Franklin told 9News.

“If it is Migaloo, he’s the only albino whale in the eastern Australian group, which now numbers over 40,000 whales and if it’s a younger white whale, that’d only be two out of 40,000.

“So it‘ an incredibly rare occurrence.”
