Queensland radio presenter Gabi Elgood has opened up about her quiet struggle to become a mother, saying she felt her body had let her down.

In an emotional on-air confession this week, the Hit Queensland breakfast presenter said she and her fiance Nev Andrews, both 33, had been trying to conceive their first child for the past 10 months, in a decision they had kept secret from their friends and family in a bid to surprise them.

After being disappointed each month and undergoing subsequent fertility testing, Elgood now regrets hiding her struggle, saying it had been an isolating experience.

“I did not realise when we had the conversation 10 months ago that it would be such an emotional journey,” she said, breaking down on-air while talking to her co-host, Cliffo.

“I was really excited about the idea of surprising everyone with that news. Now that it’s been a while and it hasn’t happened I really wish I hadn’t kept it to myself because I’ve actually needed that support network and I haven’t had it there.”

She said getting her period each month had been a “kick in the guts” and she started to feel angry at her body.

“It’s really hard, you grow up thinking this is what our bodies are made for,” Elgood said.

“I know so many people who have struggled with fertility … but when you first have that conversation you just have that faith that it’ll be easy and it’ll happen because you want it to.”

“The longer it goes on the harder and sadder it does get.

“The excitement starts to wane and the sadness grows and you are thinking ‘what if’.”

The couple have both undergone fertility testing and can fall pregnant.

While they are not at the point of beginning fertility treatments, Elgood wanted to share her struggle falling pregnant to encourage other women and men not to isolate themselves by hiding it from their friends and family.

Meanwhile Andrews said it had been difficult watching Elgood struggle each month.

“It’s been tough but I’m not the one that does the tests and paces back and forth in the bathroom waiting for those lines to appear,” he said.

“It’s hard to enjoy yourself on the weekend – we will go out for breakfast and sitting across from us is a couple with a baby stroller, even taking the dog for a walk we feel the same way, or going down certain aisles in the grocery store triggers us.”

He said he had regretted not telling his parents and siblings, who have gone through similar struggles.

“Hearing other people’s stories gives you that positive edge to move forward.”
