Queensland continues to lag in vaccination uptake as the state’s jab rate has remained relatively stagnant for three months.
Since April 22, the state’s vaccination rate hasn’t budged from the 92 per cent mark for double dosed Queenslanders despite health authorities urging people to get protected amid the third wave.
The state’s booster rate is also the lowest in the country with just 64.3 per cent of the eligible population receiving the third jab as of Thursday.
It comes as acting chief health officer Dr Paul Aitken yesterday said a significant number of the daily deaths were people who had either not been vaccinated or only received one dose.
“I think sometimes there’s a Covid complacency,” he said.
“The more we can protect ourselves the better.”
Overnight, Queensland recorded 9420 new Covid-19 cases and 17 deaths, bringing the total number of active cases to 59,005.
This is the third day in a row where the number of active cases have dropped by more than 2000, following weeks of rising figures.
There are currently 906 people in hospital receiving treatment for the virus including 30 in the ICU.
In a step to prevent additional spread, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk this morning revealed that free masks will be offered to visitors at the Ekka as they enter the showgrounds.
“It’s not a free showbag – but it’s one more way we’re protecting Queenslanders and helping us fight this COVID-19 wave,” she tweeted.
