QUEENSLAND’s most lucrative speed camera pumped a potential $3.3 million into the state’s coffers last financial year, analysis of new figures reveals.
Police documents show fixed and mobile speed cameras issued more than 828,466 infringement notices across the state during 2017-18, up from 641,840 in the previous 12 months.

The busiest camera, a fixed speed camera on Main St, Kangaroo Point, issued more than 17,500 infringements – worth about $3.3 million based on a breakdown of the severity of offences and the relevant financial penalties.
Fixed speed cameras on the Gateway Motorway at Nudgee Beach and the Gold Coast Highway at Broadbeach were close behind, each earning about $3 million from more than 15,800 infringements.
The most lucrative mobile speed camera was on Hale St, Paddington, with two locations used during 2017-18 netting about $2.4 million from more than 12,000 fines.
Despite the increase in the number of infringement notices, Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby said the public needed to stop viewing speed cameras as “revenue raisers”.
“The road toll costs the country about $30 billion annually per year,” he said.
“That’s about $5 billion up in Queensland and $150 million from speed camera revenue doesn’t even scratch the surface of that figure.”
Mr Scruby said while he backed the use of speed cameras across the state, he believed punishing people by taking their demerit points was a greater deterrent to speeding motorists than a hefty fine.
“Speeding is the greatest killer on our roads,” he said. “We have to do something to stop that.”
The data comes just days after the State Government announced it would introduce new legislation allowing it to deploy fixed and point-to-point speed cameras on stretches of road with multiple speed limits to catch even more people out.
The legislation will close a loophole that currently prevents the Government from deploying fixed and point-to-point speed cameras on stretches of road with multiple speed limits.
In January, eight high-risk intersections were also upgraded with new combined red light and speed cameras. The cameras detect motorists who drive through red lights.
