Queensland's debt forecast is an ‘obscene amount of money’: Deb Frecklington

QUEENSLANDERS are turning off Annastacia Palaszczuk as the state’s preferred premier and are even less impressed with fledgling LNP Leader Deb Frecklington, a new YouGov Galaxy poll has found.

The exclusive poll conducted for The Sunday Mail showed one in three voters were uncommitted about either Ms Palaszczuk or Ms Frecklington.

The poll, conducted late last week, showed Ms Palaszczuk’s standing as preferred premier dropped from 47 per cent in May to 44 per cent.

Over the 12 months following the 2015 election when Labor ousted the Newman government, Ms Palaszczuk consistently achieved a preferred premier rating well above 50 per cent.

The results were worse for Ms Frecklington who has cascaded from 31 per cent in the first poll after gaining the leadership following last year’s election to 23 per cent.

t is the worst result chalked up for a Queensland opposition leader since Ms Palaszczuk achieved just 15 per cent in early 2012 when she led a seven-member Labor team against the then dominant Newman administration.

Ms Frecklington’s free fall of 8 per cent in six months comes despite improvement in the LNP’s primary support which has risen from 33.7 per cent at the November state election to 37 per cent.

Almost one in four LNP voters named Ms Palaszczuk as their preferred premier.

The results showed 33 per cent of Queenslanders were uncommitted about either leader, the highest since early 2017 when support for Pauline Hanson’s One Nation party hit its peak before progressively fading.

The flagging fortunes of both leaders come amid contrasting styles.

Ms Palaszczuk has maintained a relatively low profile in recent months after the June state budget while Ms Frecklington has been attempting to raise her profile, travelling Queensland regularly and stepping in front of every microphone she can find.

“We are the underdogs here,” the LNP Leader said yesterday. “Annastacia Palaszczuk is in hiding and she is leading a secretive government.”
