The horrifying moment a toddler fell in the gap between a train and the platform has been captured in dramatic CCTV footage.
The footage, filmed at Alderley Station on November 11, 2022, shows the heart-stopping moment bystanders rush to help the child as the mother attempts to carry a pram containing another child while also trying to save her toddler.
The video is one of four released by Queensland Rail showing frightening footage of children running straight towards trains and others slipping through the gap.
Data from Queensland Rail shows there were 122 incidents where people fell in the gap between the train and the platform from January 2020 and February 2023.
In 2022 alone there were 45 falls between the train and the platform.
Queensland Rail head of South East Queensland Scott Riedel urged parents and caregivers to take extra care with their children while catching the train.
“In the footage we see a child slip between the platform and train in a split second, in another clip a little one bolts toward the train,” Mr Riedel said.
“It’s confronting, but we want to show everyone just how quickly children can find themselves in potentially dangerous situations.
“Children are often excited about boarding the train or are distracted – that’s why it’s so important for mum, dad or carers to be vigilant around the rail.”
Mr Riedel said the concerning number of people slipping between trains and platforms was a stark reminder people need to be aware of their surroundings while travelling the network.
“While small children can often fit through the gap, a larger child or adult can still sustain a painful injury if a limb slips between the train and platform,” he said.
“Most incidents occur at our busiest stations, but no matter where you’re travelling on the network we want you to keep safety top of mind.”
In other newly released footage, a child is seen running from his mother towards a train at Woodridge station on March 15, 2023, while CCTV from Roma Street on November 30, 2021, shows another child slipping through the gap.
The last piece of vision, recorded at Central Station on July 9, 2021, shows a child falling off the train and getting close to hitting the tracks.
