Queensland Labor state secretary Julie-Ann Campbell to leave role

The first woman to act as Queensland Labor’s state secretary and campaign director will leave the job following the looming federal election.

Queensland Labor’s state secretary and campaign director Julie-Ann Campbell will leave the job following the upcoming federal election.

The first woman to act in the role, Ms Campbell will leave the job she has held for the past four years to start work as associate partner with EY.

She said it had been a great honour to serve and thanked party members and staff.

“I love my job but it is time for me to pursue different opportunities and take on new challenges,” Ms Campbell said.

“I’m extraordinarily proud of leading the campaign that secured the first four-year term for Labor in Queensland with an increased majority for the Palaszczuk Government.”

She said she would be working hard over the coming months to deliver an Albanese Labor Government federally.

“I am enormously proud to have been the first woman to serve as State Secretary in Queensland,” she said.

“I hope I have helped to pave the way for even more women to take up leadership roles in our party.”

She also thanked Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for her support and for her example as “Australia’s most successful female political leader”.

A senior party source credited Ms Campbell for her work in creating Queensland Labor’s sexual harassment complaints-handling policy and said she had been instrumental in Labor embracing more ways to communicate with the electorate, being a young woman herself.

Insiders said there was no clear successor yet.
