The Greens Woolloongabba win poses no threat, says Labor

ENVIRONMENT Minister Steven Miles has shrugged off concerns about the impact of The Greens at the next State Election, insisting Labor can still win.

ENVIRONMENT Minister Steven Miles has shrugged off concerns about the impact of The Greens at the next State Election, insisting Labor can win if it governs well and delivers good policies.

The Greens won their first ever Brisbane City Council ward at last weekend’s council poll, stealing what used to be one of Labor’s safest wards,The Gabba ward, off them.

Former Labor State Secretary Anthony Chisholm told The Courier-Mail the win posed a significant threat to Labor as it attempts to win Federal and State seats.

Dr Miles - whose seat is one likely to be targeted by The Greens at the next State election - said he believed, however, that Labor could prevail if it focussed more on policies than on the Greens and Greens preferences.

“It’s my view that if we govern well and if we deliver on things that we promised - and that is in my portfolio, in the Environment portfolio but also right across government - than we can win seats in regional Queensland as well as in the inner city and urban areas,” Dr Miles said.

“I am all about winning more votes for Labor by governing better and implementing good Labor policies.

“I think we need to be less focussed on the Greens and Greens preferences and all of that and more focussed on doing good work and I think Queensland voters right across the state would reward that.”
